A four-year-old boy has died after being struck by a bus outside the Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mother Hospital in Margate, Kent, on Thursday afternoon.

The child, named Zaahir Jan, had been visiting his grandmother at the hospital when the incident occurred shortly after 4 p.m. near the entrance to the Accident and Emergency (A&E) department. According to Kent Police, the vehicle involved was a white single-decker bus.

Zaahir had reportedly walked out of the hospital on foot when he was hit. Medical staff rushed him inside for treatment, but he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

His mother, Azaria Green, paid tribute to her son in a message shared on a fundraising page. She described him as a “sweet, funny boy with a cheeky smile that could make anyone’s heart full,” adding that “devastated” did not fully express the grief felt by his family. In an emotional statement, she said: “The smile that we can’t see again. I didn’t even get to tell you how much I love you.”

Kent Police confirmed that officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit are leading the inquiry into the incident. Detectives are appealing for witnesses, particularly anyone who was on board the bus at the time and has not yet spoken to police, to come forward. They are also urging members of the public who may have dashcam or CCTV footage from the area to assist with the investigation.

The Queen Elizabeth, Queen Mother Hospital, which is operated by the East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust, has not issued a public statement regarding the incident but is understood to be cooperating with the ongoing investigation.

Local residents have expressed shock and sympathy for Zaahir’s family, with messages of condolence shared both in person and online. Community members have also contributed to the fundraising page set up to support his mother during this time.

The collision took place in a busy hospital area where vehicles and pedestrians frequently share access routes, and investigators are expected to examine all circumstances surrounding the tragedy, including road layout, vehicle speed, and visibility.

Police have asked anyone with information to contact Kent Police on 01622 798538, quoting reference RY/DGC/080824, or to submit details anonymously via Crimestoppers.

The investigation remains ongoing, and officers say all evidence will be reviewed carefully to determine how the fatal incident occurred.
