Australia’s foreign policy in the week leading up to August 15, 2025, included engagements focused on regional security, international diplomacy, and multilateral cooperation. Key scheduled meetings with Pacific nations, commitments to multilateral forums, and announcements regarding Palestine were among the official diplomatic activities conducted by Canberra.

The week began with the Australia–New Zealand Leaders’ Meeting in Queenstown on August 9, where Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon discussed bilateral relations. The leaders covered a range of initiatives to strengthen economic integration, security cooperation, and shared regional objectives. Discussions included the Trans-Tasman Roadmap to 2035, which aims to harmonize digital identity services, support net-zero emission transitions, and expand technological and financial collaboration across the Pacific.

On security matters, the two governments reaffirmed commitments under the ANZUS Treaty and endorsed plans for closer defense cooperation, including consultations on AUKUS Pillar II initiatives and potential integration of Anzac forces. Both Prime Ministers addressed Pacific stability, climate resilience, and disaster preparedness, and supported multilateral approaches to regional security. The leaders also expressed concern regarding Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the humanitarian situation in Gaza, tensions in the South and East China Seas, and instability in Myanmar.

Prime Minister Albanese and Foreign Minister Penny Wong announced that Australia would formally recognize the State of Palestine at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September. The decision follows engagement with the Arab League and includes support for governance reforms within the Palestinian Authority, such as holding elections and demilitarization measures.

Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles, Foreign Minister Penny Wong, and Defense Minister Conor McKenna conducted a diplomatic tour of the Pacific, meeting with Pacific Island nations. Discussions focused on climate change adaptation, economic development, and regional security cooperation.

Overall, the week included scheduled diplomatic engagements, announcements, and discussions aimed at coordinating policies with regional partners and participating in international forums. Canberra’s activities included meetings, treaty reaffirmations, and formal announcements regarding Palestine and Pacific cooperation.
