ISLAMABAD, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has directed federal and provincial authorities to accelerate the move toward a cashless and digital economy, emphasizing the expansion of the Raast payment system to district levels.

During a review meeting in Islamabad on Sunday, the prime minister expressed satisfaction with progress made so far and instructed chief secretaries to fully cooperate with federal authorities in implementing digital payment solutions.

Officials briefed the meeting on ongoing measures to promote nationwide digital transactions. The Pakistan Digital Public Infrastructure is set to introduce digital IDs, integrating national identity cards, biometrics, and mobile numbers to facilitate secure online payments. This initiative aims to make financial transactions faster, safer, and more accessible for citizens.

Several provincial governments have already connected public-to-government and government-to-public payments with the Raast system, marking a critical step toward reducing cash dependency and increasing transparency in financial dealings.

The meeting also discussed enhancing digital infrastructure. The Capital Development Authority has granted right-of-way for expanded fiber connectivity, and talks are underway with Pakistan Railways and the National Highway Authority to extend digital connectivity across the country.

Officials highlighted plans to create online platforms promoting Pakistani handicrafts and locally made products. This effort seeks to integrate small businesses and artisans into the digital marketplace, opening new economic opportunities, particularly in rural areas.

Senior officials attending the session included Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik, Adviser Dr. Tauqir Shah, and Minister of State for Finance and Railways Bilal Azhar Kayani.

The government’s push for a cashless economy through the Raast system is seen as a significant step toward financial inclusion and modernizing Pakistan’s economy. By reducing reliance on cash, authorities aim to curb leakages, improve revenue collection, and bring more citizens into the formal financial system.

Prime Minister Sharif reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening digital infrastructure and ensuring citizens can access secure, convenient, and transparent digital payment solutions across Pakistan.
