Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening economic cooperation with China, encouraging Chinese enterprises to invest in key sectors of the country’s economy, particularly the maritime industry.

The Prime Minister extended the invitation during a meeting with a delegation from Shandong Xinxu Group Corporation, led by its Chairman Hou Jianxin, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.

Highlighting the longstanding friendship between the two nations, Shehbaz Sharif noted that “Pakistan and China have always stood by each other in every testing time.” He emphasized Islamabad’s desire to elevate economic collaboration to a new level and assured the delegation that the government would provide full support and facilitation to Chinese investors.

The Prime Minister pointed to opportunities in Pakistan’s Special Economic Zones (SEZs), underscoring the government’s focus on creating an investor-friendly environment. Officials present at the meeting briefed the delegation on the vast untapped potential within Pakistan’s ship-breaking and ship-recycling industries.

The Shandong Group expressed keen interest in establishing a green ship-breaking yard and developing a maritime industrial complex in Pakistan. The company also indicated its plans to expand into the fisheries, fish processing, and date processing sectors, where Pakistan offers natural advantages and export potential.

Chairman Hou Jianxin thanked the Prime Minister and the Government of Pakistan for their support and facilitation, praising the country’s improving investment climate. He said his company looked forward to building long-term business partnerships in Pakistan.

The meeting was attended by Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry, Prime Minister’s Advisor Dr. Tauqir Shah, and senior government officials. Discussions centered on how collaboration in maritime and allied sectors could generate jobs, boost exports, and promote sustainable industrial growth.

Pakistan’s outreach to Chinese enterprises aligns with its broader strategy to attract foreign direct investment, diversify industrial bases, and expand economic ties with its long-standing strategic partner. The government continues to position Special Economic Zones as central hubs for industrial activity, where Chinese expertise and investment are expected to play a significant role in accelerating development.

Observers note that expanding cooperation in ship-breaking and fisheries could not only create employment opportunities but also help Pakistan strengthen its position in the regional maritime economy. With China signaling strong interest, the partnership is expected to bring in new technologies and environmentally sustainable practices, particularly in green ship recycling.

The latest engagement underscores the importance of Pakistan-China relations, with both countries looking to translate their strategic ties into deeper economic integration.
