Trump has nominated Sergio Gor as U.S. Ambassador to India, also naming him Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs, a role that does not require Senate confirmation. The announcement was made on August 22, 2025, through his Truth Social platform.

As Director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office, Gor has overseen staffing across the administration. Trump highlighted his achievements, stating that Gor and his team had hired nearly 4,000 “America First Patriots,” filling more than 95 percent of federal positions.

Gor responded on X (formerly Twitter), expressing appreciation for the president’s trust. “It will be the honor of my life to represent the United States,” he posted, adding that serving the American people has been his proudest accomplishment.

Vice President J.D. Vance also voiced his support, calling Gor “a great guy” who would make a “fantastic ambassador” for the United States to India.

The nomination comes as U.S.-India relations face pressure from escalating trade disputes. Earlier this month, the administration imposed a 25 percent “reciprocal” tariff on Indian imports. From August 27 onward, an additional 25 percent penalty will target India’s continued purchase of Russian oil, bringing total duties to 50 percent. These measures are among the highest Washington has imposed on any trading partner.

India’s Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal has said the country remains “very open” to resolving trade issues, though recent talks have stalled and a planned U.S. trade delegation visit has been canceled.

Born in Tashkent, then part of the Soviet Union, Sergio Gor later moved to Malta and eventually to the United States, where he graduated from George Washington University.

Gor previously worked for Senator Rand Paul, served on Trump’s campaign and in the Trump Victory Finance Committee, and co-founded a conservative publishing house that released several of Trump’s books. In November 2024, he was appointed Director of the White House Presidential Personnel Office.

Gor’s appointment underscores the administration’s strategy of elevating trusted political allies to prominent diplomatic positions. Observers note that placing loyalists in high-profile roles abroad is consistent with the administration’s broader personnel approach.

With Senate confirmation pending, Gor’s role could prove pivotal in managing U.S.–India relations during a period of heightened trade tensions and shifting geopolitical priorities.
