Atlanta, Georgia,  State officials confirmed that nearly 471,000 voter registrations were canceled this week as part of a routine review of Georgia’s voter rolls. The cancellations primarily affected individuals who have moved or have not participated in recent elections, officials said.

Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger emphasized the importance of maintaining accurate voter records. “People move, pass away, or change addresses across the state,” Raffensperger said last month. “We want to ensure our voter list is accurate and up to date.”

State Election Director Blake Evans explained that the office contacted all voters whose registrations were under review. “Those individuals were on a 40-day notice period, which ended in the past few days,” Evans said. “The records of those who did not respond have now been canceled.”

According to officials, this year’s list maintenance is part of a legally required process conducted every other year. The canceled registrations represent roughly six percent of Georgia’s voter list. In addition to the 471,000 cancellations, about 800 individuals either passed away or voluntarily requested to have their registrations removed. Approximately 5,500 voters responded to the notification letters and confirmed their information, keeping their registrations active.

While the process follows state and federal law, voting rights advocates have expressed concern about potential impacts on eligible voters. Andrea Young, executive director of the Georgia ACLU, said, “There is a risk that this activity could inadvertently disenfranchise eligible voters.”

Evans defended the process, stating, “This is a lawful and necessary process. Accurate voter rolls are critical to the integrity of elections.”

Officials said the cancellations are part of the Secretary of State’s broader effort to maintain up-to-date voter records while balancing accessibility and election security. The state remains committed to ensuring all eligible citizens can participate in elections.
