Whitley Bay Funfair Closes After Serious Ride Incident

A funfair in Whitley Bay, Tyne and Wear, was closed this afternoon following a serious incident in which a man sustained significant injuries while on a ride. Emergency services were called to the Spanish City Summer Funfair at approximately 2:15 p.m. after reports of a person being hurt.

The North East Ambulance Service responded quickly, dispatching a rapid response paramedic, a clinical team leader, an emergency ambulance crew, and the Great North Air Ambulance Service. An off-duty medic who was present also assisted in providing immediate care to the injured individual.

According to a spokesperson from the North East Ambulance Service, they received the call at 2:13 p.m. and coordinated a multi-team response due to the severity of the incident. The air ambulance landed on the grassed area near the funfair, which was busy with families at the time.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson confirmed they received a report of concern for the welfare of a man at the Spanish City Plaza area shortly after 2:15 p.m. Police officers were present at the scene alongside medical teams, and the funfair was subsequently closed to the public until further notice.

North Tyneside Council also confirmed the closure, citing an “emergency incident” as the reason. Authorities stated that further updates would be provided by Northumbria Police as the situation develops.

By 3:00 p.m., ambulance crews were still in attendance, and no further details regarding the man’s condition have been released at this time. The nature of the injuries has only been described as “serious,” and investigations into the incident are ongoing.

The Spanish City Summer Funfair is a popular seasonal attraction in the coastal town of Whitley Bay, drawing visitors from across the North East. Organisers have not yet announced when the event will reopen.
