KANSAS CITY, Mo. Early Sunday morning, a shooting near Kansas City’s downtown entertainment district left two people dead and three others injured.

The incident occurred around 3:30 a.m. on August 24 near East 13th Street and Grand Boulevard, less than two blocks from the T-Mobile Center. The Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) and the Fire Department responded to the scene.

Preliminary investigation indicates the shooting stemmed from an argument in a parking lot. Multiple shots were fired, police reported.

One man died at the scene, while another man, initially in critical condition, died at the hospital at approximately 6:40 a.m. Authorities have not released the victims’ identities or ages.

Three additional victims were hospitalized: a man with serious injuries, a juvenile boy in critical condition, and a woman with non-life-threatening injuries.

Sergeant Phil DiMartino of KCPD commented on the incident, emphasizing the broader community impact. “I don’t know much, if anything, that is worth pulling a firearm out and shooting someone,” he said. “Whether it is an argument, a disagreement, whatever it might be, nothing is worth someone losing their life over. Now all of these people have been shot, it doesn’t just affect the victims directly involved; an entire community can feel those effects.”

Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas addressed the shooting in reference to a recently proposed ordinance targeting surface parking lots in entertainment districts. The proposed law aims to regulate lots in areas including KCP&L, 18th and Vine, Westport, and the Country Club Plaza, where incidents of gun violence have occurred frequently.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting. Police are reviewing surveillance footage and interviewing witnesses to determine the chain of events.

Officials urge anyone with information related to the shooting to contact KCPD. The city’s law enforcement agencies remain committed to reducing violence and ensuring public safety in entertainment districts.

The incident adds to ongoing concerns about safety in downtown Kansas City, particularly during late-night hours when large crowds gather in the area’s restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues.

While investigations continue, city leaders are exploring measures to improve public security, including increased patrols and potential adjustments to city ordinances affecting high-traffic areas.

Residents and community members are encouraged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activity. Authorities stress that community cooperation is crucial in preventing similar incidents in the future.
