One Killed in Wake County US-64 Crash Early Sunday

 A passenger died in a single-vehicle crash early Sunday on US-64 East near Lizard Lick Road, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol.

The incident occurred shortly after 4 a.m., when the vehicle was traveling eastbound toward Lizard Lick Road. The vehicle ran off the roadway to the left, struck the median guardrail, crossed both eastbound lanes, and ultimately collided with a tree. Following the crash, the vehicle caught fire.

When troopers arrived at the scene, the passenger was found dead. The post-crash fire made identification of the remains impossible, according to Sgt. Joshua Kiser of the State Highway Patrol. The passenger’s identity has not yet been released.

The driver of the vehicle sustained injuries and was transported to WakeMed Hospital for treatment. Charges related to the crash are currently pending, Kiser said.

Sgt. Kiser indicated that speed and reckless driving were contributing factors in the crash. The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.

Authorities are urging drivers to exercise caution and adhere to posted speed limits, especially during early morning hours when visibility is low and road conditions can be unpredictable. The State Highway Patrol continues to investigate and will release additional details when available.

Traffic on US-64 was temporarily disrupted as emergency responders managed the scene. Drivers are advised to consider alternate routes while cleanup and investigations continue.
