UK Condemns Russia’s Use of Chemical Weapons in Ukraine, Pledges Stronger Support

 The UK Ministry of Defence has condemned Russia’s continued use of banned chemical weapons in Ukraine, calling it a blatant violation of international law and reaffirming Britain’s commitment to holding perpetrators accountable.

Responding to a parliamentary question, Defence Minister Luke Pollard confirmed that the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has verified the presence of CS gas, an internationally restricted riot control agent, in samples collected from Ukraine’s front lines. “Russia’s use of chemical weapons on the front lines in Ukraine is wholly unacceptable,” Pollard said.

In response, the UK has both sanctioned Russian individuals and labs and stepped-up practical support to Ukraine. This includes the provision of decontamination kits, respirators, and an additional £3 million in protective equipment funding, jointly procured with Canada through the G7-led Global Partnership. The UK has also contributed to the OPCW’s Assistance to Ukraine Trust Fund to enhance detection and protection capabilities on the battlefield.

Pollard emphasised Britain’s close coordination with allies through the UN and OPCW to ensure a unified response. “The UK will not allow such blatant violations of the Chemical Weapons Convention and rules-based order to go unpunished,” he said, signalling continued diplomatic pressure and material support for Ukraine’s defence against chemical threats.
