Australia and the UK Collaborate on Guided Weapons R&D to Enhance Defense Capabilities

Australia and the United Kingdom have formalized a partnership to advance the development of next-generation guided weapons systems. Signed in February 2025, the Copperhead Project Arrangement aims to integrate innovative technologies from both nations to produce affordable, modular weapon subsystems. This collaboration represents a significant step toward enhancing the Australian Defense Force’s (ADF) capabilities in a rapidly evolving strategic environment.

The partnership combines Australia’s Sharktooth program with the UK’s Modular Weapons Testbed, leveraging both nations’ expertise to accelerate the development and deployment of advanced weapon systems. Sharktooth, led by the Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG), is a small guided missile project that facilitates the rapid integration of components such as sensors, warheads, guidance systems, and propulsion units. The Modular Weapons Testbed, developed by the UK’s Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl), provides a flexible platform for testing and evaluating new weapon technologies.

According to Dr. Michael Sharp, a research leader at DSTG, the “plug-and-play” modular technology offered by this partnership enables the ADF to adapt swiftly to evolving threats on the battlefield. This approach allows for the combination of various weapon components or a mix of weapons, providing a versatile and agile response to mission requirements. The integration of these technologies is expected to confer an asymmetric advantage, contributing to a strategy of deterrence.

The Copperhead Project also aligns with Australia’s Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance (GWEO) Plan, which seeks to build sovereign manufacturing capabilities and strengthen supply chains. The Australian Government has invested nearly $60 million to support domestic industry partnerships with DSTG on GWEO subsystem technologies. This investment aims to develop capabilities in areas such as rocket motors, propulsion modules, modular warheads and fuses, advanced seekers, and innovative guidance, navigation, and control technologies.

Professor Tanya Monro, Australia’s Chief Defence Scientist, emphasized the importance of international partnerships in delivering advanced defence capabilities. She noted that collaborations like the Copperhead Project enable the development of cutting-edge science and technologies that provide the ADF with a competitive edge in a contested global security environment.

The partnership between Australia and the UK underscores the commitment of both nations to strengthening their defence capabilities through innovation and collaboration. By pooling resources and expertise, the two countries aim to accelerate the development of advanced weapon systems that enhance the effectiveness and agility of their armed forces.

This initiative is part of Australia’s broader strategy to enhance its defense industry and technological capabilities, ensuring that the ADF remains well-equipped to address emerging threats and challenges. Through such international collaborations, Australia seeks to bolster its sovereign defense capabilities while contributing to regional and global security efforts.
