MANILA, Philippines, Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin on Friday welcomed Australian Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Richard Marles at Malacañang Palace during a courtesy visit ahead of the second Philippines-Australia Defense Ministers Meeting (DMM).

The meeting, hosted by the Department of National Defense, will focus on bilateral and regional security concerns, highlighting the strategic partnership between Manila and Canberra. Marles’ visit comes amid heightened attention on regional stability in Southeast Asia, particularly in maritime security and joint defense initiatives.

On the sidelines of the DMM, Marles is scheduled to observe Exercise Amphibious and Land Operations, known as Exercise Alon 2025. According to the Presidential Communications Office (PCO), this is Australia’s largest overseas joint military exercise this year, underscoring the growing collaboration between the Australian Defence Force (ADF) and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).

Running from August 15 to 29, Exercise Alon 2025 involves over 3,600 personnel from the AFP and ADF, along with contingents from the Royal Canadian Navy and the United States Marine Corps’ Marine Rotation Force–Darwin. Training exercises are being conducted across multiple locations in Luzon, including Palawan, focusing on amphibious landings, joint maneuvers, and operational coordination.

The exercise aims to enhance interoperability between participating forces while strengthening defense readiness and regional security. Philippine officials emphasized that these joint activities provide valuable experience for both nations in responding to complex scenarios, ranging from humanitarian assistance to disaster response and security operations.

Marles’ visit also provides an opportunity to review ongoing defense initiatives, discuss future training exercises, and reinforce mutual commitments under existing defense agreements. Philippine defense authorities have noted that these engagements strengthen diplomatic ties and foster long-term stability in the Asia-Pacific region.

Executive Secretary Bersamin highlighted the significance of Marles’ visit, stating that “Exercise Alon 2025 demonstrates the importance of collaborative training and the shared commitment of both nations to regional peace and security.” The Philippines and Australia have maintained a growing defense partnership, with regular joint exercises, personnel exchanges, and strategic dialogues forming the backbone of their cooperation.

Observers note that such meetings and exercises are crucial in ensuring preparedness against evolving security challenges in the region. The Philippines-Australia defense relationship has expanded over the years, encompassing naval, air, and ground operations, and this year’s Exercise Alon 2025 represents a high point in collaborative efforts.

In addition to security discussions, Marles’ visit emphasizes the diplomatic dimension of defense engagement, reaffirming the commitment of both nations to mutual support and regional stability. The Philippines and Australia continue to explore additional avenues for collaboration, including training programs, intelligence sharing, and humanitarian initiatives.

Exercise Alon 2025 concludes later this month, with both nations expected to review lessons learned and assess the effectiveness of joint operations. The exercise and high-level discussions are seen as essential components of a comprehensive defense partnership, ensuring that Manila and Canberra are prepared to address current and future regional challenges effectively.
