Dallas, TX Rising rap artist BigXthaPlug, born Xavier Landum, was arrested early Friday, Aug. 22, coinciding with the release of his third studio album, I Hope You’re Happy, according to Dallas County court records.

Landum, 27, was booked at 2:20 a.m. on charges of marijuana possession under two ounces and unlawful possession of a firearm, both classified as misdemeanors. The arrest occurred just hours before an album release event scheduled at the Dallas nightclub Cash Cow, according to the rapper’s Instagram account.

The new album marks a significant milestone in BigXthaPlug’s career, featuring collaborations with notable country artists including Ella Langley, Jelly Roll, Luke Combs, Tucker Wetmore, Shaboozey, Thomas Rhett, Bailey Zimmerman, and Darius Rucker.

BigXthaPlug gained broader recognition last month when pop superstar Beyoncé incorporated his hit song, The Largest, as an interlude on her Cowboy Carter tour. The exposure has been a notable breakthrough for the Dallas-based rapper, highlighting his growing influence in the music industry.

Speaking to USA TODAY in July, BigXthaPlug reflected on the impact of Beyoncé’s endorsement. “It not only signifies what I’m doing, but it shows that I’m not the only one willing to push this,” he said. “It makes me feel good that there’s somebody out there supporting what I’m pushing.”

The artist’s social media accounts indicate that the album release party on Thursday, Aug. 21, was intended as a high-profile celebration, but his early morning arrest disrupted the event. Representatives for BigXthaPlug did not respond immediately to requests for comment from USA TODAY.

This arrest is the latest incident involving emerging hip-hop artists navigating legal issues amid rising fame. While Landum faces misdemeanor charges, the music industry often sees such challenges coinciding with high-profile career moments, underscoring the scrutiny that accompanies mainstream success.

BigXthaPlug’s fans continue to engage actively with his music online. Early reactions to I Hope You’re Happy highlight the rapper’s ability to blend rap and country influences, appealing to a diverse audience. Tracks featuring established country stars are expected to expand his reach further, merging genres in ways that have drawn attention from both country and hip-hop music communities.

As legal proceedings unfold, BigXthaPlug’s career trajectory appears poised for continued growth despite the arrest. Observers note that collaborations with prominent artists and mainstream visibility, including being featured by Beyoncé, provide momentum that can sustain his career through temporary setbacks.

With his third studio album now available across streaming platforms, listeners can access BigXthaPlug’s latest work while the rapper addresses his legal situation.
