Maryland, August 22, 2025, Former U.S. National Security Advisor John Bolton’s home in Maryland was raided by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) on Friday morning, according to multiple reports. The raid was first reported by the New York Post at 7 a.m., and Fox News broadcast a breaking news alert during its morning program.

The investigation is reportedly related to the handling of classified documents. Per sources cited by the Associated Press, Bolton has not been detained or charged. FBI agents were observed entering the property, carrying bags, although nothing was reported as leaving the residence.

Bolton, who served as national security advisor under former President Donald Trump until 2019, confirmed he was unaware of the FBI activity at the time and was seeking more information. The operation has been described as part of an ongoing inquiry into possible unauthorized disclosures of classified material.

This is not the first time Bolton has been under scrutiny for sensitive information. In 2020, he published a memoir titled The Room Where It Happened, which included critical assessments of Trump’s foreign policy decisions. The book contained claims that Trump sought assistance from foreign leaders regarding the 2020 U.S. presidential election and other controversial statements.

Following the memoir’s release, Trump attempted to block its publication and criticized Bolton publicly. The Department of Justice investigated whether Bolton had unlawfully disclosed classified information in the book. Under the Biden administration, the criminal investigation was closed, and a related lawsuit was dropped in 2021.

Trump has repeatedly criticized Bolton over the years. In January of his second term, Trump revoked Bolton’s security clearance and canceled the protective detail previously provided due to security threats.

Bolton has publicly expressed critical views of Trump, including statements made in interviews regarding Trump’s handling of foreign relations. In recent remarks, Bolton described Trump as a “useful idiot” in relation to Russian interests, a phrase he used in reference to speculation about Trump’s interactions with Russia.

The FBI raid has drawn attention due to Bolton’s high-profile role in U.S. politics and his past public disagreements with Trump. Officials have emphasized that the ongoing investigation is procedural and that no charges have been filed at this time.

The Daily Express US reported that both the FBI and the White House were contacted for comment. Authorities have not provided additional details regarding the scope of the investigation or any potential legal proceedings.

This event highlights ongoing scrutiny of former officials and their handling of classified information, a subject that has prompted multiple investigations in recent years. Bolton’s case will likely continue to be monitored by media outlets as more information becomes available.
