Terence Stamp, one of Britain’s most distinguished film actors, has died at the age of 87. His family confirmed his passing on Sunday, 17 August 2025, to Reuters.

Born in London’s East End in 1938, Stamp’s career spanned more than six decades and established him as a defining presence in both British and international cinema. He first came to prominence in the early 1960s with his breakout performance in Billy Budd (1962), a role that earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor and a Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer.

Stamp quickly became a leading figure of the “Swinging London” era. His striking looks and commanding presence on screen led to major roles in films such as The Collector (1965), for which he won Best Actor at the Cannes Film Festival, and Far from the Madding Crowd (1967). His personal life also attracted attention during this period, particularly his relationship with actress Julie Christie.

Although his career slowed in the 1970s, Stamp made a powerful return with his portrayal of the villain General Zod in Superman (1978) and Superman II (1980). The performance cemented his reputation with a new generation of audiences and remains one of his most iconic roles.

Over the following decades, Stamp took on a wide range of parts across genres. Notable films included The Limey (1999), Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999), Valkyrie (2008), and The Adjustment Bureau (2011). He also returned to the Superman universe by voicing Jor-El in the television series Smallville. His final screen role came in Last Night in Soho (2021).

In addition to acting, Stamp pursued writing. He published memoirs reflecting on his career and personal life, as well as a novel. His interests outside of cinema included travels to India in the 1970s, where he immersed himself in yoga and philosophy before his career resurgence.

Throughout his career, Stamp appeared in more than 120 films and television productions. His ability to play both complex leading roles and memorable supporting characters made him one of Britain’s most versatile performers.

In a statement, his family said: “He leaves behind an extraordinary body of work, both as an actor and as a writer, that will continue to touch and inspire people for years to come.” They also asked for privacy as they mourn his passing.

Terence Stamp’s death marks the end of an era in British cinema. From his early rise in the 1960s to his memorable performances in Hollywood blockbusters, his legacy is set to endure through the many films that defined his long and remarkable career.
