Canada Strengthens Arctic Defense with $6B JORN Radar Deal

Canada has made a significant leap in enhancing its defense capabilities by securing a deal to purchase Australia’s Jindalee Over-the-Horizon Radar (JORN) system for CAD 6 billion. The advanced radar system is renowned for its ability to detect threats up to 3,000 kilometers away by utilizing high-frequency signals that bounce off the ionosphere. This system is particularly crucial for monitoring the vast and increasingly contested Arctic region, making it a strategic acquisition in light of the shifting geopolitical dynamics.

The decision to acquire JORN marks a key shift in Canada’s defense strategy. Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the need for Canada to take greater responsibility for its defense amid changing global security priorities, particularly with the evolving stance of the United States under President Donald Trump. In addition to the radar system, Canada is investing CAD 420 million to enhance its military operations in the Arctic, including the construction of new military hubs and airstrips to support year-round operations in the region.
