Crypto Group Linked to WNBA Game Disruption

A cryptocurrency-focused online group has claimed responsibility for recent disruptions during Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) games, where sex toys were reportedly thrown onto the court. The incidents, which took place during multiple games in recent weeks, have drawn widespread attention and prompted both league and law enforcement investigations.

The group, which operates under the name “Solsnatchers,” alleged on social media that its members coordinated the stunts to promote a new digital token. Posts on the group’s channels showed images and videos of the events, along with messages encouraging followers to take part in similar disruptions at future games.

WNBA officials have condemned the actions, stating that throwing objects onto the court poses safety risks to players, referees, and fans. “This type of behaviour will not be tolerated,” the league said in a statement. “We are working with venue security and local authorities to identify those responsible.”

According to the New York Police Department, one incident at the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn resulted in a brief delay during a game between the New York Liberty and the Connecticut Sun. Witnesses reported that several items were thrown from the stands in the third quarter, causing officials to stop play while staff removed them from the court. No injuries were reported, but the individuals involved left the arena before they could be detained.

The “Solsnatchers” group has framed the incidents as a publicity campaign for its cryptocurrency, which it claims is built on the Solana blockchain. The group’s online platforms include provocative marketing material and statements encouraging “viral” actions to attract attention. Cryptocurrency experts have warned that such tactics could be illegal and may draw regulatory scrutiny.

Professor Martin Ellis, a finance and digital assets expert at Columbia University, said that while cryptocurrency projects often seek unconventional ways to gain attention, targeting public sporting events can cross into criminal activity. “If this was coordinated, documented, and publicly promoted, those responsible could face charges ranging from trespassing to disorderly conduct,” he explained.

The WNBA is reportedly working with both local police and private security firms to strengthen crowd control at upcoming games. Increased bag checks, stricter entry screenings, and the use of additional security staff are expected to be implemented.

This is not the first time sports events have been targeted for publicity stunts by cryptocurrency promoters. In recent years, various groups have used high-profile events to display banners, distribute merchandise, or stage other disruptive actions, sometimes leading to fines and arrests.

The Solsnatchers group has indicated it plans to continue such activities, despite the negative response from the league and fans. However, legal experts note that public acknowledgement of responsibility could make it easier for authorities to build cases against organisers and participants.

For now, WNBA officials are urging fans to respect the rules and enjoy games without disruptions. The league emphasised that safety and fair play remain its top priorities.
