Melbourne, Victoria,  Architectural designer Stephen has listed his family home in Donvale, showcasing a blend of 1950s and Swedish-inspired design set among natural bushland. The property, at 319 Oban Road, sits on a 5,204-square-metre lot, allowing for native vegetation preservation while remaining close to Melbourne’s city amenities.

Stephen, who previously lived in Camberwell, said the location offered a balance between nature and convenience. “We were drawn to this area not only for its trees and wildlife but because we could enjoy these benefits and still be close to the city, where I work, and local shops and schools,” he explained.

The two-level home was largely a personal project, with Stephen overseeing the build and managing much of the construction. Assistance was provided by the Ravida Group for structural work, while a carpenter friend and his apprentice son contributed to finishing touches. A distinctive feature is the red-stained cypress cladding, inspired by traditional Swedish Falu Rödfärg timber homes.

The home’s interior includes five bedrooms and three bathrooms. Spacious north-facing living zones provide views of the surrounding bushland and its wildlife, including kangaroos, wallabies, echidnas, kookaburras, and parrots. The design maximises sunlight during winter and offers elevated views along a creek that runs along the eastern boundary.

Central to the property are open-plan lounge and dining areas that connect to a large deck via stacker doors, providing an entertainment space for family gatherings. High ceilings, extensive glazing, and carefully selected materials combine functional living with a contemporary aesthetic.

Stephen emphasised the hands-on approach allowed him to oversee every detail and make adjustments during construction, resulting in a home that balances privacy and shared living. Each bedroom offers private space, while the open-plan main areas encourage family interaction.

The property is listed between $2.48 million and $2.728 million. Its combination of Scandinavian design, bushland setting, and custom construction may appeal to buyers seeking a distinctive family home within reach of Melbourne’s amenities.
