A 32-year-old man has been charged with the murder of his brother following a fatal stabbing incident in Dunmurry, Northern Ireland.

Martin Lowry, of no fixed abode, appeared before Lisburn Magistrates’ Court on Saturday, where he faced charges of murder and possession of a knife. The incident, which occurred on August 21 in the Mulberry Park area, resulted in the death of Shane Lowry, who was in his 30s. Shane Lowry succumbed to his injuries on Thursday evening after being treated in hospital for serious stab wounds.

During the court hearing, a Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) constable confirmed that there was evidence connecting the accused to the charges. Martin Lowry spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth. No application for bail was made, and District Judge Eamonn King ordered that he be remanded in custody. He is scheduled to appear again before Lisburn Magistrates’ Court on September 15.

A significant police presence remained in the Mulberry Park area and surrounding streets on Friday as investigations continued. Officers maintained a cordon around the scene to facilitate forensic examinations and gather evidence related to the incident. PSNI has urged anyone with information about the stabbing to come forward to assist with the ongoing investigation.

Local representatives expressed concern following the tragic event. Sinn Féin MLA Danny Baker said there was a “sense of shock and sadness” within the community. He also noted that the stabbing occurred shortly after a fire had been reported in a nearby block of flats in the same estate. Baker urged residents to remain calm and allow police to carry out their inquiries without interference.

The incident has highlighted the close-knit nature of the Dunmurry community, where residents have been left stunned by the sudden and violent loss of life. Neighbours described the area as generally quiet, and the stabbing has prompted calls for increased vigilance and community support during the investigation.

Authorities have not released further details about the circumstances leading up to the fatal stabbing, and investigations remain ongoing. Martin Lowry remains in custody while the legal proceedings continue, and police have reiterated their appeal for witnesses to provide any information that could assist in the case.

This tragic event underscores the PSNI’s ongoing efforts to ensure public safety and bring those responsible for serious crimes to justice.
