ENGLAND – England’s men’s hockey team started their EuroHockey Championships campaign strongly with an impressive 5-0 win over Poland in Monchengladbach, Germany. The victory sets a positive tone for their Pool B fixtures as the tournament progresses.

The match began with England taking an early lead thanks to David Goodfield, who capitalised on a solid team effort to open the scoring in the first half. Despite Poland’s resilience and strong defensive efforts, England maintained control and gradually extended their advantage as the game unfolded.

Jacob Payton added a second goal in the third quarter with a precise finish, increasing England’s dominance on the field. Phil Roper contributed to the scoring with a well-timed goal, followed by a deflected penalty corner from Sam Ward that found the back of the net. Tom Sorsby rounded off the scoring with a late goal in the final minute of the game, sealing a comprehensive victory for England.

Reflecting on the performance, midfielder Tom Sorsby praised the team’s commitment and discipline throughout the match. “We really stuck at our game plan. I was really proud of the boys to keep digging in knowing we were doing the right thing, and we persevered and scored a few more goals,” he said. Sorsby also joked about his own involvement, saying, “I think I had more shots in that game than in my entire international career so far, and I want to convert a few more.”

This dominant performance comes after England’s journey to the 2023 EuroHockey Championships final, where they narrowly missed out on the title. Their strong start against Poland highlights the team’s determination to build on that success and contend for the trophy again this year.

England will now prepare for their next challenging fixture against tournament hosts Germany, scheduled for Sunday at 14:00 BST. This match will be a significant test, as Germany has home advantage and a strong squad. Following the clash with Germany, England will face France on 12 August at 11:30 BST.

The men’s team aims to continue their winning momentum and secure qualification from Pool B to progress deep into the competition. With a combination of tactical discipline and attacking prowess, England looks well-positioned to make a significant impact at the EuroHockey Championships this summer.
