EU Pushes to Break U.S. Security Dependence, Prioritize European Weapons

BRUSSELS, The European Union has launched a bold new plan to reduce its military reliance on the United States, unveiling its “Readiness 2030” strategy to boost homegrown defense capabilities amid rising fears of Russian aggression.

With NATO intelligence warning that Russia could be ready to strike again in as little as three years, and the Trump administration signaling a shift in U.S. security focus toward Asia and domestic borders, the EU is urging member states to buy more European-made military equipment.

Under the plan, EU countries will be encouraged to work with European suppliers, with financial incentives and faster procurement processes. Foreign purchases will only be considered when local options are less viable.

“This is about Europe taking responsibility for its security,” an EU official said, calling the move a push for strategic autonomy.

While NATO remains central to European defense, the message from Brussels is clear: Europe must be ready to stand on its own.
