Eurostar Unveils Ambitious £1.7bn Expansion to Connect UK with Two New Countries in Under Five Hours

Eurostar has announced a major £1.7 billion (€2 billion) investment to dramatically expand its high-speed rail operations across Europe. The plan includes the introduction of up to 50 new trains and the launch of three additional direct routes, including two that will connect the UK to previously unlinked countries all within a five-hour journey time.

This strategic expansion follows a strong financial performance in 2024, during which Eurostar reported an EBITDA of €346 million (£296 million). With rising passenger numbers and growing demand for sustainable travel, the company is positioning itself at the forefront of European rail innovation.

While the precise destinations have yet to be confirmed, industry speculation points to major cities such as Barcelona, Cologne, and Geneva. These routes would significantly improve connectivity between the UK and mainland Europe, offering a viable alternative to short-haul air travel and supporting the broader shift toward low-emission transport options.

In addition to expanding its network, Eurostar will focus on upgrading customer experience across the board. The new fleet will feature modern, energy-efficient designs and increased passenger capacity. Digital enhancements to ticketing and station services are also planned, aiming to streamline the entire journey from booking to arrival.
