A murder investigation is underway in Freemantle, Southampton, after the body of a man in his 60s was discovered in a flat on Richmond Road. Hampshire Constabulary has confirmed the arrest of three local men on suspicion of murder, all of whom remain in custody as detectives continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the death.

Police were called to the scene at approximately 4:50 p.m. on Wednesday following a report that a deceased male had been found in a residential property. Upon arrival, officers secured the area, with multiple police units seen responding, and a cordon was quickly established. Early inquiries led to the arrest of three men, aged 37, 41, and 43, all of whom are from Southampton.

According to Hampshire Constabulary, their “initial understanding” suggests this was an isolated incident with all individuals involved believed to be known to one another. While details remain limited, investigators have assured the public that there is no wider threat to the community at this stage.

Councillor Dave Shields, former Lord Mayor of Southampton and ward representative for Freemantle, described the incident as “shocking,” but noted that it “doesn’t come as a surprise” given the challenges some parts of the area have faced in recent years. Speaking to the local press, Shields expressed concern over the broader social issues affecting certain communities but praised police for their swift action.

A police spokesperson stated, “A prompt investigation into the exact circumstances is being carried out. We are urging anyone with information, no matter how minor, to come forward to assist with our inquiries.”

Residents have been advised to remain vigilant but reassured by officers that there is no indication of ongoing danger. Hampshire Constabulary continues to appeal to the public for any details that may assist in the case. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact police directly via 101 or to report anonymously through the independent charity Crimestoppers, which can be reached at 0800 555 111.

As the investigation develops, more details are expected to emerge in the coming days. The community remains on edge as authorities work to bring clarity and justice to what is shaping up to be a deeply troubling incident.
