Germany’s Merz Criticizes Israeli Offensive in Gaza

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has issued his strongest criticism yet of Israel’s military actions in the Gaza Strip, stating that the extensive harm to civilians can no longer be justified as a fight against Hamas terrorism. Merz expressed confusion over the objectives of the Israeli army in Gaza, highlighting the severe humanitarian crisis resulting from the ongoing conflict. His remarks mark a significant shift in Germany’s traditionally strong support for Israel, reflecting growing international concern over the escalating violence and its impact on the civilian population.

Despite this criticism, Germany has refrained from endorsing an arms embargo against Israel. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to Israel’s security, emphasizing the importance of maintaining support for the only democratic state in the region. However, he acknowledged the moral and political dilemmas posed by the current situation and advocated for increased humanitarian aid to Gaza through diplomatic channels. Germany, along with other European nations, is considering a review of its association agreement with Israel, rather than a complete suspension of relations.

The conflict has resulted in over 53,500 Palestinian deaths, with 1,200 Israelis killed during Hamas’s October 2023 attack. The international community continues to call for an end to hostilities and a renewed focus on humanitarian assistance and peace efforts.
