Germany’s Merz Criticizes Israeli Offensive in Gaza

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has issued his strongest criticism yet of Israel’s military actions in the Gaza Strip, stating that the extensive harm to civilians can no longer be justified as a fight against Hamas terrorism. Merz expressed confusion over the objectives of the Israeli army in Gaza, highlighting the severe humanitarian crisis resulting from the ongoing conflict. His remarks mark a significant shift in Germany’s traditionally strong support for Israel, reflecting growing international concern over the escalating violence and its impact on the civilian population.

Despite this criticism, Germany has refrained from endorsing an arms embargo against Israel. Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul reaffirmed Germany’s commitment to Israel’s security, emphasizing the importance of maintaining support for the only democratic state in the region.
