Greek Government to Increase Pensions for Working Retirees

In a significant policy shift, the Greek government has announced a pension increase for retirees who continue to work, aiming to provide financial relief and support to those who balance both employment and retirement.

This decision, revealed on Friday, seeks to acknowledge the contributions of working retirees while addressing the economic challenges posed by inflation and rising living costs.

The Ministry of Labour stated that eligible retirees will receive an additional boost to their monthly pensions, enhancing their overall income and encouraging continued participation in the workforce. The move is expected to benefit thousands of retirees who have chosen to remain employed, despite receiving their pension benefits.

This policy is part of a broader effort by the Greek government to stimulate the economy and ensure that retirees can maintain a decent standard of living. Labour Minister Kostis Hatzidakis emphasized the importance of supporting working retirees, asserting that their experience and skills are invaluable to the workforce.

Critics of the previous pension system argued that it inadequately supported those who continued to contribute to the economy while drawing pensions. The new initiative reflects the government’s commitment to reforming the pension system and providing better financial security for retirees, ultimately fostering a more inclusive economic environment.
