Honduras: Calls to Halt Violence Against Human Rights Defenders

Geneva, Switzerland – The World Organisation Against Torture (OMCT) issued a statement on February 12, 2025, urging the Honduran government to take immediate action to stop the violence against human rights defenders, particularly in the community of Agúan. The organization emphasized the need to protect those who advocate for human rights and environmental justice, highlighting the alarming trend of attacks targeting these individuals.

The statement specifically called for an end to the collaboration with Corporación Dinant, a palm oil company implicated in numerous human rights abuses, including land dispossession and violence against local communities. The OMCT underscores that continued trade with such corporations not only undermines human rights but also perpetuates a cycle of violence and impunity in Honduras.

“Human rights defenders in Honduras face daily threats to their safety and well-being simply for standing up against injustice,” stated an OMCT representative. “It is imperative for the government to ensure that these individuals can carry out their vital work free from fear of violence or retribution.”

The organization further urged the international community to reconsider their economic ties with Honduras until effective measures are implemented to protect human rights defenders and hold accountable those responsible for violence and intimidation. The call to action emphasizes the need for a collective effort to promote human rights and uphold the rule of law in Honduras.
