HYDERABAD, A 27-year-old cab driver has been arrested on charges of murdering his pregnant wife in Medipally, part of the Hyderabad metropolitan area. Police say the man killed his wife on Saturday afternoon before attempting to conceal the crime by dismembering her body and disposing of parts in the Musi River.

The accused has been identified as Mahender Reddy, who worked as a driver for a ride-hailing company. His wife, Swathi alias Jyothi, was three months pregnant. According to investigators, Reddy allegedly strangled and smothered Swathi at their rented home in Boduppal. He then used a blade to sever her head, hands, and legs.

Police said the accused packed some of the body parts in small plastic bags and disposed of them in the Musi River in three separate trips. “The torso was retained in the room, while other parts were thrown into the river,” said DCP PV Padmaja of the Malkajgiri zone. The remains were sent for post-mortem examination, and forensic tests, including DNA analysis, will assist the investigation.

The crime came to light after Swathi’s relatives filed a missing person complaint at the Uppal police station. When police questioned Mahender, he reportedly confessed to the killing. Authorities secured the crime scene and collected evidence before placing him under arrest and sending him to judicial remand.

Police sources revealed that the couple’s marriage had faced difficulties soon after it began. Swathi had lodged a domestic violence complaint against her husband in April 2024 in their native Vikarabad district. Village elders mediated, and the couple temporarily reconciled. They had first been in a relationship before marrying in January 2024 in an arranged ceremony. Following the marriage, they moved into a rented apartment in Boduppal.

Investigators believe the relationship became increasingly strained in recent months. According to reports, Mahender doubted his wife’s character and insisted she give up her job at a call center. Swathi, who became pregnant in March 2025, had recently told her husband she planned to visit Vikarabad for a medical check-up on August 22. Police say this discussion may have triggered the fatal altercation.

Authorities continue to search for the missing body parts and are reconstructing the sequence of events leading up to the killing. Forensic experts are expected to provide additional clarity, and the investigation is examining whether any relatives or acquaintances were aware of the conflict before the incident.

The case has drawn significant attention locally due to the brutal nature of the crime. Police officials have assured that all legal procedures are being followed and that a detailed chargesheet will be filed once the investigation is complete.

As of now, Mahender remains in custody, and police are working to piece together the circumstances that led to the killing. The incident has highlighted the challenges of addressing domestic disputes that escalate into violence despite earlier interventions.
