Lammy and Vance Hold Talks on US-Brokered Ukraine Peace Plan

UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy and US Vice-President JD Vance have met at Chevening House to discuss a proposed US-brokered peace plan for Ukraine. The talks brought together Ukrainian representatives and senior officials from France, Germany, Italy, Finland, and Poland, as preparations continue for the upcoming Alaska summit between US President Donald Trump and Russia’s Vladimir Putin.

The meeting centred on ensuring that Ukraine remains a direct participant in any negotiations, with Lammy stressing that peace must be built on Kyiv’s full involvement and consent. European leaders and the European Commission issued a joint statement after the talks, reaffirming that peace will require sustained diplomatic efforts, continued military and financial support, and ongoing pressure on Russia to halt its aggression.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has already rejected any plan involving territorial concessions, saying that Ukraine’s sovereignty and borders are non-negotiable. European officials echoed that position during the meeting, signalling their opposition to any suggestion that parts of Ukraine could be ceded as part of a settlement.

The discussions at Chevening also reflected a coordinated Western response to signals from Trump that a peace deal might involve land swaps. While the US administration has pursued its own diplomatic track, European leaders made clear they will not support proposals that undermine Ukraine’s territorial integrity.

Delegates agreed that a durable peace must be accompanied by continued Western military aid and economic backing for Ukraine. They also underlined the need to prevent any perception that Ukraine’s future could be decided without its active participation.

As the Alaska summit approaches, both European and US officials are seeking to present a united front, ensuring that Ukraine’s position is not sidelined in the search for a resolution. The Chevening meeting underscored a clear message from Western capitals: any peace agreement must respect Ukraine’s sovereignty, restore its internationally recognised borders, and secure long-term stability.

The coming weeks will be critical as world leaders navigate the next stage of diplomacy. The outcome of the Trump-Putin talks could shape not only the trajectory of the war but also the broader framework for European security in the years ahead.
