Manchester Airport Issues Hand Luggage Advisory for Summer Travel

As Manchester Airport gears up for what it expects to be its busiest summer on record, it has issued a firm reminder to passengers to adhere to existing hand luggage regulations. This comes amid a gradual rollout of advanced security scanners across UK airports, which promise to ease long-standing restrictions on liquids and electronics in carry-on bags.

The new scanners, already operational in all three of Manchester Airport’s terminals, will eventually allow travellers to pass through security with liquids exceeding 100ml and without removing electronic devices from their bags. 

However, the airport has emphasised that not all security lanes are yet fully equipped with this technology. As a result, passengers are urged to adhere to current rules, ensuring that liquids are kept to 100ml or less and electronics are prepared for inspection. This pragmatic approach aims to avoid delays and maintain smooth operations during the peak travel season.

The Department for Transport has echoed this sentiment, noting that airports like Birmingham and Edinburgh are also transitioning to these modern scanners but have not yet fully implemented them. The gradual pace of this upgrade, while practical, underscores the need for travellers to stay vigilant and comply with existing guidelines to avoid disruptions.

Manchester Airport’s preparations follow a record-breaking June, with passenger numbers surpassing previous highs. In a recent interview with Travel Weekly, Chris Woodroofe, Managing Director at Manchester Airport, said: “We’ve bolstered staff across all areas and opened key sections of our new Terminal 2, including additional check-in desks and a state-of-the-art security hall. Passengers can help by preparing for security, ensuring electronics are accessible, and liquids comply with the 100ml limit.”

The airport’s proactive measures reflect its role as a vital hub for northern England, with ambitions to solidify its status as the UK’s regional gateway. With the summer rush looming, travellers are advised to plan, pack smartly, and arrive early to navigate security with ease.
