Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the nation from the Red Fort on Independence Day, set out a roadmap for India’s long-term progress, emphasising self-reliance, strong defence, and sustained economic growth. He described Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) as the cornerstone of a Viksit Bharat, a developed India by 2047.

Modi stated that India must continue turning challenges into opportunities to secure its position as a global leader. He highlighted the transformation during the COVID-19 pandemic, when domestic initiatives under Atmanirbhar Bharat helped stabilise the economy and accelerate growth despite global disruptions.

Looking ahead, the Prime Minister projected India’s economy to reach between $30 and $35 trillion by 2047, supported by infrastructure development, innovation, manufacturing, and expanded exports.

Defence and Security Initiatives

A key part of Modi’s address was the announcement of the “Sudarshan Chakra” initiative, described as a broad security architecture designed to strengthen India’s defence preparedness. According to him, this system would enhance India’s offensive and defensive capabilities, ensuring the nation remains secure in an increasingly uncertain global environment.

The focus on self-reliance in defence production, he said, would not only reduce dependence on imports but also position India as a significant production hub capable of supplying international markets.

Economic Challenges and Trade Relations

Modi also acknowledged the global trade challenges India faces, particularly the tariff threats from the United States. These tariffs, driven by concerns over trade imbalances, India’s oil purchases from Russia, and stalled negotiations, could affect key export-driven sectors such as automobiles, IT services, textiles, and pharmaceuticals.

However, he underlined that such challenges must be treated as opportunities to strengthen India’s resilience. The government’s response, he noted, would combine diplomacy with reforms aimed at safeguarding exports while continuing to expand domestic capabilities.

Vision for 2047

Concluding his speech, Modi reiterated that India’s journey to becoming a developed nation depends on its ability to adapt to global shifts while remaining committed to its principles of self-reliance and innovation. The dual pillars of economic strength and defence preparedness, he said, would ensure India’s place among the world’s leading nations by the centenary of independence.
