Indian comedian Bharti Singh has spoken candidly about her difficult childhood, revealing the hardships she endured even before her birth. Appearing on entrepreneur Raj Shamani’s podcast, she shared how her mother, overwhelmed by poverty and the responsibility of raising children alone, attempted several unsafe methods to end her pregnancy.

Singh explained that her mother, who already had two children, sought advice from local faith healers and consumed harmful herbs to abort the pregnancy. She also undertook strenuous physical work and ate unsafe foods, hoping it would terminate the child. Despite these attempts, Singh was born. “I cost Rs 60,” she recalled, referring to the fee her mother paid a midwife to cut her umbilical cord after giving birth at home.

Her father passed away when she was just two years old, leaving her mother to raise the family as a domestic worker. Singh described those years as marked by extreme hardship. Yet she expressed admiration for her mother, calling her “a goddess” for the sacrifices she made.

Singh’s career took off after her breakthrough on The Great Indian Laughter Challenge. Initially, relatives discouraged her mother from taking her to Mumbai, fearing risks in the entertainment industry. Her mother’s decision to support her ambition proved crucial. “If she hadn’t made that decision, I wouldn’t be here today,” Singh said.

Now married to writer Haarsh Limbachiyaa, Singh has become a household name in Indian entertainment. She runs a YouTube channel with over seven million subscribers and has appeared in several television shows. Despite her success, Singh remains devoted to her mother, who underwent a kidney transplant last year. Singh admitted she was terrified of losing her, adding that her greatest fear is living without her.

Singh has also spoken about her bond with her mother in moments of faith, sharing how she prayed for her recovery during surgery and later fulfilled her wish to visit Puri together.

From a child once considered unwanted to a performer who bought her mother a home worth Rs 1.6 crore, Singh’s story is one of resilience, survival, and the enduring strength of family ties. Her honesty continues to inspire audiences beyond her comedic talent
