Nagpur police have arrested a 21-year-old man accused of targeting multiple liquor shops and beer bars across the city in an unusual series of break-ins motivated by his father’s death from alcohol addiction.

The accused, identified as Raja Khan, also known as Raja Amravati, allegedly began the burglaries earlier this year. Investigators said Khan blamed liquor establishments for fueling his father’s dependency, which he believed led to his death two years ago. In each incident, police reported, Khan stole cash and cigarettes but deliberately left alcohol untouched.

The latest break-in occurred on July 31 at a bar and restaurant near Rani Durgawati Chowk. Police said Khan escaped with ₹36,530 in cash and 15 cigarette packets worth around ₹3,700. Records indicate he had carried out similar offenses at no fewer than eight establishments. Authorities also noted that the stolen money was spent on purchasing ganja.

Following the incident, Nagpur police launched a focused investigation. A team led by Head Constable Laxman Shende, under the supervision of Senior Inspector Baburao Raut and Zonal Deputy Commissioner of Police Rahul Madane, reviewed CCTV footage and collected intelligence that helped trace Khan’s movements. He was apprehended in the Dighori area and taken into custody.

During questioning, Khan admitted to the crimes and told police he wanted to “teach liquor shop owners a lesson” for what he viewed as their role in his father’s death. Officers recovered ₹5,000 from him at the time of arrest.

Police emphasized that while Khan’s motives were personal, his actions amounted to theft and property damage. They underlined that liquor businesses in Nagpur operate under licensed regulations and that grievances must be addressed within the law.

Shopkeepers in the affected areas expressed concern over repeated break-ins, which had created unease among employees. Police have increased patrols and promised tighter surveillance in vulnerable locations to reassure business owners.

Khan has been placed in judicial custody, and authorities are investigating whether others were linked to the series of burglaries. Officials said the case serves as a reminder that personal loss cannot justify criminal acts.
