Romania’s Presidential Election: A Victory for European Unity

In a pivotal runoff on May 18, 2025, Romania elected Nicușor Dan, a pro-European Union centrist, as its new president, defeating nationalist candidate George Simion. Dan secured 53.9% of the vote, while Simion garnered 46.1%. This result marked a significant reversal from the first round, where Simion had led, and underscored Romania’s commitment to EU integration and democratic values. 

Dan, the former mayor of Bucharest and an anti-corruption reformer, campaigned as an independent, focusing on fiscal reform, EU cooperation, and support for Ukraine. His victory was bolstered by high voter turnout, both domestically and among Romanians abroad. European leaders, including EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, congratulated Dan, emphasizing the importance of Romania’s continued alignment with European principles. 

Simion, known for his anti-EU rhetoric and support for annexing Moldova, acknowledged his defeat but vowed to persist in promoting nationalist values. His campaign faced criticism for its reliance on disinformation and concerns over Russian interference, which had previously led to the annulment of the November 2024 election. Despite his loss, Simion’s influence remains a significant force in Romania’s political landscape.

Dan’s election is seen as a victory for democracy and European unity, signaling a preference for stability and international cooperation over nationalist populism. As Romania prepares for the formation of a new government, the focus will be on addressing domestic challenges while reinforcing its role within the European Union.
