Russia’s Burning East: Siberia’s Wildfires Blaze Out of Control

In May 2025, Siberia is grappling with an unprecedented wildfire season, with over 174 active fires scorching more than 629,000 hectares across the Russian Far East. The Zabaykalsky Krai and the Republic of Buryatia are the hardest-hit regions, where human activities, such as the burning of dry grass, have ignited approximately 90% of the blazes.
