Russia’s Fiber-Optic Drones Pose Major Challenge for Ukraine

Russia’s increasing use of fiber-optic drones on the battlefield is posing a significant challenge for Ukrainian forces. These drones, which are connected to operators through cables extending up to 20 kilometers, are immune to electronic warfare jamming, making them highly effective in penetrating Ukrainian defenses. Their ability to operate at low altitudes and carry out precise strikes has already resulted in considerable damage to Ukrainian artillery and military equipment. Additionally, Ukrainian forces have been using acoustic and visual detection methods to track and neutralize these drones. However, these countermeasures are still in the early stages, and Ukraine is working to refine its technological defenses.

Despite Ukraine’s efforts, the widespread use of fiber-optic drones by Russia has changed the dynamics of the conflict. Ukrainian intelligence officials have acknowledged the difficulty of countering these drones with current electronic warfare systems.
