UK Lancashire Police Investigate Human Remains Found in Lytham

Lancashire Police are investigating after human remains were discovered by builders carrying out renovation work at a property in Lytham. Officers have confirmed that the bones could belong to children, though tests are ongoing to establish their origin and age.

The discovery was reported at around 12:37pm on 15 August, when builders working on a house in Cleveland Road, Lytham, contacted local authorities after unearthing what appeared to be bones. Police attended the scene and secured the area while initial forensic examinations were carried out.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police confirmed that the remains are being treated with the utmost seriousness and respect. “We were called following reports of bones discovered during building work at a property in Lytham. Our specialists are conducting detailed inquiries to establish the circumstances and whether the bones are of historical or more recent origin,” the spokesperson said.

Forensic teams, including anthropologists, are now examining the remains to determine if they are human, their estimated age, and whether foul play may have been involved. While early assessments suggest the remains could belong to children, police stressed that testing is ongoing and no conclusions have yet been drawn.

Local residents have expressed concern following the discovery, with some noting that the property where the bones were found has stood for many years. Police have reassured the public that there is no immediate threat to safety in the area.

Authorities confirmed that there is no evidence at this stage to link the find to any ongoing missing person cases in Lancashire. Detectives are working with forensic specialists to piece together how and when the remains came to be buried at the property.

The investigation will include carbon dating and DNA analysis, which may take several weeks to complete. The results will determine whether the case is treated as a criminal investigation or if the remains are of historical significance.

Lancashire Police have appealed for calm as speculation spreads locally. Officers have asked the public not to share unverified claims on social media and to allow investigators the time to carry out their work.

The property remains sealed off while examinations continue, with officers maintaining a visible presence on Cleveland Road. Updates will be provided once forensic results are available. The discovery comes as Lancashire Police continue to manage several complex investigations across the county, though officers emphasised there is no reason to believe the cases are connected.

The force has urged anyone with relevant information about the property or its past ownership to contact Fylde Police on 101, quoting log reference number 0654 of 15 August. Anonymous information can also be provided through Crimestoppers.
