UK Sunshine Coast Beach Evacuated After Suspicious Device Found

Authorities evacuated Peregian Beach on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast after the discovery of a suspicious device, prompting an emergency response and temporary exclusion zone.

The incident occurred just after midday on Friday, when beachgoers were instructed to leave the area following the appearance of a large object that had washed ashore. Witnesses reported seeing a torpedo-shaped device lying on the sand, which immediately raised concerns about public safety.

Queensland Police quickly secured the scene, establishing a 100-metre exclusion zone around the object. Emergency crews worked with local authorities to ensure all members of the public were moved to a safe distance while assessments were carried out.

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) was called in to investigate the device. Military specialists examined the object under controlled conditions to determine whether it posed a threat.

After inspection, the ADF confirmed that the device was not dangerous but instead identified it as a marine marker. These markers are often used in maritime operations for navigation, training, or signaling, and can occasionally wash ashore due to strong tides or storms.

The discovery caused significant disruption to Peregian Beach, a popular coastal destination located between Noosa and Coolum. The beach remained closed to the public for several hours while the investigation and safety checks were completed.

Local authorities emphasised that public safety was their highest priority and praised the quick response of emergency teams. A Queensland Police spokesperson said the evacuation was necessary until experts could determine the nature of the object.

While the device was ultimately deemed harmless, the incident highlighted the ongoing need for vigilance when unknown items are discovered in public areas. Officials advised that anyone encountering suspicious objects along the coast should immediately alert authorities rather than attempting to move or investigate the item themselves.

Residents and visitors to the Sunshine Coast expressed relief that the situation was resolved without injury. Many noted the efficiency of the evacuation and the professionalism of the teams involved.

Incidents of unexploded or unusual devices occasionally occur along Australia’s coastline, often linked to maritime activity or equipment lost at sea. Authorities treat each case with caution to ensure public safety.

Peregian Beach reopened to the public later in the day, with no further risk reported. Officials confirmed that the marine marker would be removed for safe disposal.

The swift response by emergency services and Defence Force teams reassured locals and tourists that proper protocols are in place to handle such events.
