Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and the United States hold high-level talks in London on 9 August to discuss advancing peace efforts and strengthening support for Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. The meeting brings together senior officials, including UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, US Vice President J.D. Vance, and Ukraine’s Head of the Presidential Office Andriy Yermak, alongside Defence Minister Rustem Umerov. Delegations from several European nations also attend.

During the discussions, Ukrainian representatives reaffirmed their position that any peace agreement must preserve Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, and must include Kyiv as an active participant. They stress that no settlement can recognise Russian control over occupied areas, and that a ceasefire cannot be allowed to turn current frontlines into permanent borders. President Volodymyr Zelensky states that Ukraine’s constitutional rights to its land are non-negotiable, emphasising that the outcome must be a just and lasting peace.

The UK pledges continued military, financial, and diplomatic backing for Ukraine, alongside sanctions against Russia, until aggression ends.

Speaking after the meeting, Mr Lammy highlights the importance of maintaining international unity and resisting proposals that undermine Ukrainian sovereignty.

The talks take place ahead of a scheduled summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, where peace proposals may be discussed. Ukrainian officials express concern that any agreement reached without their direct involvement would be unacceptable. Mr Yermak warns that decisions about Ukraine cannot be made in its absence and that the country’s future must be decided with full respect for its independence.

In addition to peace negotiations, the London meeting covers ongoing military aid, humanitarian support, and post-war reconstruction planning. The US and UK reiterate their joint stance that Ukraine must emerge from the conflict as a secure, sovereign nation with the ability to deter future aggression.

This diplomatic effort follows earlier summits aimed at building a united front among Ukraine’s allies. The outcome reinforces a clear message: peace cannot come at the cost of territorial concessions or the erosion of national independence.
