Violence Erupts on Strode Road: Six Arrested After Portsmouth Home Attack

A quiet Friday evening in Tipner, Portsmouth, turned into a scene of chaos and fear after a group of men reportedly attacked a home on Strode Road, prompting a swift and heavy response from armed police.

Shortly after 9:30 p.m. on July 4, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary received reports of a large crowd damaging property and threatening people at the address. Residents described a tense and alarming atmosphere as more than 20 officers, including armed units, flooded the area. Witnesses spoke of “blue lights everywhere” and police “with guns all over,” as concerned onlookers gathered nearby.

While initial rumours suggested a stabbing had occurred, police later clarified that no one had suffered stab wounds. However, one man did receive a minor hand injury during the incident.

Among those arrested was a 27-year-old man from Southsea, held on suspicion of threatening someone with a blade. A 21-year-old, a 25-year-old, and two 28-year-old men, all from Portsmouth, were arrested on suspicion of affray, with some also suspected of racially aggravated harassment or criminal damage. All but one were released on bail until October 5. The 25-year-old man arrested solely on suspicion of affray has been released with no further action.

The response left residents shaken, with many expressing concern about the safety of the area. “There were so many officers, and people just watching in shock,” one resident said. “It’s not something you expect to see on your doorstep.”

Portsmouth District Commander, Superintendent Paul Markham, addressed the situation on Saturday. “We understand incidents like this can cause concern in the community,” he said. “We have launched a full investigation and continue to conduct patrols in the area to reassure residents.”

Police are urging anyone with information to come forward and speak with officers. They’ve also reassured the public that the situation is under control and that further enquiries are ongoing to determine exactly what happened that night.

As the investigation continues, many in Tipner are left hoping this was an isolated incident, not a sign of more trouble to come. For now, the police presence remains strong, as officers work to restore a sense of safety and calm in the neighbourhood.
