Western Australia Launches Drive for Election Nominations

A new campaign has been launched in Western Australia, encouraging residents from all walks of life to nominate for this year’s local government elections.

The initiative, led by the Western Australian Government in partnership with the Western Australian Local Government Association (WALGA), highlights the importance of diversity in local councils and urges people to consider standing for nomination.

The promotional drive, titled “You Are the Right Material,” will begin next week. It aims to raise awareness about the nomination process and the role of elected members in shaping the future of their communities. The campaign stresses that councils are a vital level of democracy, providing essential services that residents and businesses rely on daily.

Local Government Minister Hannah Beazley said the elections were an opportunity for residents to play a more active role in shaping their communities.
“Standing for council is a great way to step up and make a difference for your local community,” she said.
“Local governments make important decisions that shape our everyday lives, so they must reflect the diverse communities they serve.”

WALGA President Karen Chappel, who has more than two decades of experience in local government, also urged community members to take part.
“Being elected to represent your community is a privilege,” she said.
“With local government elections being held in October, we would like to see more people from all walks of life nominating for council.”

To be eligible, candidates must be Australian citizens aged 18 or over, residents or property owners in their district, and must complete the mandatory local government candidate induction.

Nominations officially open on 28 August and close at 4 pm on 4 September 2025. Voting day is scheduled for Saturday, 18 October 2025.

The second phase of the campaign will focus on encouraging voter participation, reminding residents that their voices matter and their votes directly influence local decision-making.

Elected members in local government play a critical role in representing grassroots communities across the state, making decisions on local services, infrastructure, and community initiatives. The campaign emphasises that greater diversity among elected representatives helps councils respond more effectively to the needs of their residents.
