Work Begins on £16m Research Hub at Southampton Science Park

Construction has begun on a £16 million research and development facility at Southampton Science Park, intended to boost scientific innovation and support local economic growth. A ground-breaking ceremony on 21 July marked the official start of the project.

The new development, named Infinity Labs, will provide a laboratory and workspace designed for early-stage science and technology enterprises. Designed to support research-intensive companies, the facility is intended to address the shortage of specialist lab space in the region. Its completion is expected by the end of 2026.

According to the developers, the name Infinity Labs was selected to reflect the potential of successful scientific start-ups and their contribution to the economy. The facility forms part of Southampton Science Park’s broader strategy to foster innovation-led growth by providing the infrastructure required for scientific discovery and commercialisation.

The launch event welcomed several guests for breakfast at the Science Park’s Axis Conference Centre, followed by a ceremonial spade-in-the-ground moment at the construction The gathering included stakeholders from the science and business sectors, highlighting the project’s significance to the region’s innovation network.

Southampton Science Park, located in Chilworth, Hampshire, is a major science and technology hub in the South East of England. It is home to a range of high-tech firms and academic spin-outs, benefiting from its close ties with the University of Southampton.

Once complete, Infinity Labs will provide a purpose-built environment to support the scaling of UK-based research ventures, with the long-term aim of generating skilled employment and fostering commercial breakthroughs in science and technology.
